Enigin Update - Dallas Playing Catch-Up on Energy Efficient
THE Texan city of Dallas has been slower to react to energy issues than many of their North Texan neighbours. But the city of Dallas has now taken a strong and forceful approach to greening the city, making up for lost time.
Dallas’ Mayor, Tom Leppert, chose to lead by example by demanding significant green efforts from city departments, helping illustrate the importance of this initiative to local businesses and residents.
Dallas has focused green efforts around energy conservation, emission reduction, sustainable agriculture, sustainable landscaping, recycling, water conservation and storm water management.
They have also set green construction standards for commercial, municipal and residential buildings.
As an example Fire Station No. 42 was opened in 1957 and hence has high levels of asbestos, was a fire hazard and inadequate for the needs of this area of town. So a new building was built that is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified (LEED), incorporating energy-efficient lighting, and other efficiency measures inside and out.
Dallas businesses have placed strong emphasis on communicating information on their green activities to consumers, attracting more business.
To further raise interest and awareness in environmental issues across Dallas businesses, Mayor Leppert has taken a series of steps.
During the spring he hosted the 2nd Annual Mayor’s Environmental Excellence Awards, making presentations to businesses and others who had made a significant contribution to green efforts. Plus the city has developed a website — www.greendallas.net — dedicated to providing information on how businesses and citizens can become environmentally effective.
Enigin Distributors in the region have the ideal tools to help businesses and municipalities to be able to manage their energy in real-time, adding the right load-side products based on sound energy use data from the Eniscope.
