Enigin Update - Compulsory Energy Audits Considered for Maharashtra
THE MAHARASHTRA government, in western India, is considering framing a specific policy making energy audits mandatory for commercial, government and semi-government buildings.
A government official said that the aim is to ensure energy conservation:
"With a view to reduce consumption of power and check its misuse, the government is contemplating to frame a separate policy for making energy audit mandatory for commercial as well as government buildings."
It has been reported that a few industries have been carrying out energy audits, but then have not taken any action to conserve power or use renewable energy, he said.
"The industrial sector has been carrying out energy audits. But the problem is that after the audit is done, no steps are taken with regards to energy conservation or use of renewable energy. The policy would ensure effective implementation of energy conservation measures," the official said.
Initially the government would be making it mandatory for commercial structures to carry out energy audits followed by government buildings, he added.
However, he also said that there is a need for the government to set up a proper implementation channel with schemes to ensure that energy efficiency and use of renewable energy is achieved.
