Enigin Update - City Mayors Gather to Tackle Climate Change

MAYORS from some of the world's major cities have today pledged to do their part, using energy efficiency to curd carbon emissions blamed for global warming.

The Mayors come from cities who are part of the "C40" group and are in Hong Kong ahead of a major UN climate meeting to discuss how to tackle climate change, including making buildings energy efficient.

The "C40", launched in 2005, is an initiative of more than 40 cities which work together to reduce carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency in large cities around the world.

Hong Kong's chief executive Donald Tsang told delegates at the C40 forum, which started today:

"Each of our cities share common goals, to reduce our carbon footprint, to make our environment more livable and to join hands to combat global warming and climate change,

"Cities are home to more than half of the world's population, they consume over two-thirds of the world's energy and emit more than 70 percent of total carbon dioxides."

Tsang also warned that climate change poses an "unprecedented challenge" and that there is "clear consensus" that action is urgently needed. He called on cities to "unlock the full potential of low carbon technologies".

The outgoing C40 chairman, Toronto mayor David Miller, told the conference:
"We need a variety of policies, programmes and projects with, and between, cities to succeed,

"The C40 has provided its network with an exceptional opportunity to share and learn on how to successfully remove greenhouse gas emissions," he added.

Miller will hand over the chairmanship to New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, who told the conference that his city is focusing on several green strategies, such as reducing building pollution.

Enigin Distributors worldwide are helping cities to lower their greenhouse gas emissions by helping commerce, industry and public sector organisations to get a hold on their energy use and prevent wastage.

Using Enigin PLC's Eniscope and related products and solutions many companies and organisations are reducing their energy demand, carbon footprint and energy costs without affecting services or production - a win win situation for the decision makers and their city and region.

The Hong Kong C40 meeting comes ahead of the United Nations' annual climate summit, in Cancun, Mexico, where countries are hoping to secure a binding global treaty on how to limit and cope with climate change.

This would replace the Kyoto Protocol, which expires at the end of 2012 and aims to keep global warming below the threshold that scientists warn will trigger catastrophic damage to the world's climate system.
