Enigin Update - China Struggling to Save Energy

IN China’s east Zhejiang province, a coastal region which consumes a large amount of energy, the head of Shaoxing County Government, Sun Yunyao, has introduced a series of tough measures to reduce energy usage in the area.

A letter of commitment by the Shaoxing County Government has been signed to shut down inefficient businesses in county. By September 15th, all major energy guzzling factories must be closed down in the county.

The Chinese government has a five year plan which promises to cut the country’s energy consumption by 20%, this year is the final year of that plan.

The past four years of the plan has seen the national energy consumption figure reduce by 14.8%.

Zhejiang set the target for energy reduction at 3.2% for 2010, but only a 1% decline was achieved in the first half of the year.

"This means we have to take a tougher approach in the days left in the year." said Cong Peijiang, official with Zhejiang Economic Information Technology Commission.

This is a long term obligation for China to look at a restructure of its economy and ensure that energy efficiency and energy saving is a top priority. The country must look to replace its energy intensive industries with low energy consuming and high value added ones.
