Enigin Update - China looks for Increased Efforts on Energy Efficiency

CHINESE Premier Wen Jiabao has called for increased efforts in energy saving and efficiency to reduce emissions over the next five years and promote sustainable development.

A statement released after a State Council meeting revealed that China fulfilled the majority of the binding energy-saving and emission reduction goals it laid down in their 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-2010).

The statement revealed over the last five years that the country’s energy consumption increased by 6.6 percent annually, which is substantially less than the 11.2 percent increase in their economic growth.

Jiabao added that greater efforts need to be made in promoting energy efficiency and in reducing emissions across key areas, with the country eliminating out-dated capacity, implementation of energy efficiency projects along with promoting the use of energy-saving and efficiency products.

Jiabao also called for increased efforts in optimising China's industrial structure, developing the service industries and strategic emerging industries, while building a stable, economical, clean and safe energy system.

Wen also urged further introduction of advanced technologies to raise energy efficiency, reduce pollution, and strengthen energy-saving and emissions-reduction management.

The country will continue with reforms of environmental taxes and resources taxes, he said.

The State Council also reviewed and approved in principle the 2011-2015 work plan on energy-saving and emissions reduction.
