Enigin Update - Cancún Commitment from Regional and State Governments

THE UN climate change talks in Cancún face an uncertain outcome but an offshoot meeting of over 60 states and regional officials is reporting on real action amongst smaller governmental agencies.

The Alliance of state and regional governments met last year at the equivalent UN conference in Copenhagen with its members making a commitment to take real action in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to report back this year in Cancún.

During The Climate Group’s annual Climate Leaders Summit many of those “actions” were revealed such as in the Brazilian city of São Paulo, who have committed to cut emissions by 20 percent by 2020 or the Rhône-Alpes region of France, who have set an emissions reduction target of 40 percent by 2020.

A statement issued by the Alliance in Cancún revealed that the members pledge to increase efforts on energy efficiency and renewable energy generation, amongst other actions, ahead of next years international meeting in Durban, South Africa, when they will provide another update.

Representatives from China attended the meeting for the first time, with the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, the Rhône-Alpes and Upper Austria promising to join the Alliance.

Steve Howard, CEO of The Climate Group. said:

“The subnational governments in our Alliance are not waiting for a global agreement but are forging agreements of their own.

“They are accelerating bold, new climate policies that will also boost jobs and growth in their economies. These laboratories for low carbon development should provide real confidence to international negotiations in Cancún.”

Enigin Distributors are helping many regional governments directly, plus businesses in their areas, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by helping them become energy efficient through installing Enigin Plc's energy saving technology.
