Enigin Update - Australia needs Carbon Price to Achieve Desired Energy Efficiency
AUSTRALIA’S Federal Government commissioned a report which states that the country should increase its energy efficiency by 30 per cent over the next decade.
The report by the Australian prime minister's taskforce was handed to the cabinet in July but is published today and states that the best way to achieve the 30 percent target is with a carbon price.
It contains such recommendations as greener building codes, greater energy efficiency standards and disclosure requirements, along with encouragement from power generators to use less energy.
The report states:
“By far, the most important element in a vision of a step change in Australia's energy efficiency improvement is the presence of an explicit price on carbon.
“An explicit carbon price will underpin and catalyse energy efficiency throughout the economy, greatly enhancing the effectiveness of proposals in this report.''
Climate Change Minister Greg Combet says the report will be an important part of the climate change debate.
"Pollution is contributing to climate change, we therefore as a government have a responsibility to consider ways of cutting pollution,
"Supporting renewable energy, promoting energy efficiency and introducing a carbon price into the economy are three responsible ways of doing that." Combet concluded.
Enigin Distributors in Australia, and globally, are equipped with the technology and experience to enable commerce, industry and the public sector to be able to achieve energy efficiency within their own facilities, reducing energy costs but also avoiding future carbon credit costs and fines for operating inefficiently.
