Enigin Update - Airport Cuts Energy Usage for One Hour
TO PROVE what savings can be achieved the Allegheny County Airport Authority (ACAA) took part in a regional energy conservation test program, called PJM Demand Response, at their Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) last.
The airport spokeswoman JoAnn Jenny said that this is an effort to “lighten the load” on the electric grid in the Northeastern part of the US. Lights, air conditioning, electric walkways, escalators and other devices were switched off in various areas of the airport, with the aim to save about 2,000 kilowatts.
The switch off did not impact on flights and will had minimal affect on passengers and employees.
ACAA implemented a customer service plan for the hour long power outage, including having extra employees around helping people with disabilities. Jenny said only one train ran to and from terminals.
Jenny added, “It’s a project where if we do meet the amount of energy savings that we set as our goal, there is some financial incentive—we’ll get some type of reimbursement.”
Jenny says several companies are participated in the program across 13 states, with the goal of saving nearly 3,000 megawatts.
