Enigin Update - $300 Million Energy Saving for Ghana

Enigin Update - $300 Million Energy Saving for Ghana

GHANA has been able to save nearly $300million, following a vigorous national energy saving campaign.

According to Ghana’s Energy Foundation the energy saving campaign has resulted in the reduction of electricity consumption by 125 megawatts, equivalent to $300million in power generation costs.

At the launch of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Month, instituted by Ghana’s Energy Commission, Nana Asare Afriyie of the Energy Foundation revealed that $12million had been spent on the energy saving project, clearly making the case for energy efficiency, rather than producing more electricity to meet demand.

The Ghana government’s objective of achieving middle income status for the nation by 2015 requires adequate and reliable energy supply, which in the short to medium term would be produced from petroleum or gas-fired thermal plants.

“This requires huge investment outlays and could strain the economy and deprive other sectors such as education, health and roads of the much-needed funds,” Asare said.

Enigin Distributors in Ghana are helping private and public sector organisations to become energy efficient, saving financially on their ever rising utility bills.

Steps to bring Ghana’s electricity tariffs to economic levels requires raising awareness of energy efficiency amongst consumers, lowering the demand on the current power generation grid nationwide, saving also on the urgent need for expensive building of new generating facilities.

Kofi Wayo, a member of the Energy Commission Board, said recently that the high growth in energy demand has been straining the energy infrastructure, causing environmental damage and hindering economic growth.

Wayo added that growth in energy demand can be accommodated through energy efficiency and conservation, particularly in the commercial sector. He also stated that improvements in energy efficiency would reduce the need for investment in energy infrastructure, cut fuel costs, increase competitiveness and improve consumer welfare.

“Energy efficiency and conservation offers a powerful and cost-effective tool for achieving a sustainable energy future,” Wayo concluded.

Enigin Plc's energy saving solutions offer a very good return on investment.
