Enigin Update - 10 Week Analysis Highlights $350 Million Energy Savings

A STAGGERING $350 million savings from energy efficiency was identified by just 51 MBA students on summer fellowship programmes at U.S. Fortune 1000 companies.

The complete figures are impressive, alongside $350 million in net operating savings over considered project lifetimes there were also reductions of 400,000 metric tons of annual greenhouse gas emissions, and more than 650 million kilowatt hours of electricity.

GreenBiz.com reveled the findings of the by 51 EDF Climate Corps fellows with some of the stories behind the individual analysis, providing evermore convincing evidence of the importance of energy efficiency to businesses.

The research shows how a resourceful person with analytical skills, energy efficiency awareness, plus a focus on energy use can recognise where huge savings in costs and emissions can be made.

To illustrate, consider some of the results, GreenBiz.com focused on three stories:

* Nick Fassler evaluated hospital energy efficiency projects for HCA Inc. in Nashville, Tenn. Fassler found ways to reduce energy use from lighting by up to 30 per cent, which, if rolled out across HCA’s hospitals, could save the company $7.8 million in annual electricity costs and cut 52,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year.

* Ryan Mallett spent his summer looking at energy savings at communications company Verizon. During one of the hottest summers on record, Mallett evaluated the installation of a thermal ice storage system at Verizon’s headquarters in lower Manhattan. The investments Mallet recommended could save the company a total of $9.16 million over the project lifetimes, while avoiding more than 8,700 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually.

* At eBay’s San Jose headquarters this summer, Megan Rast evaluated opportunities to save energy by installing power management software, lighting retrofits, and replacing older computers. The projects she recommended could save more than $1.5 million over their lifetimes, and avoid more than 4,800 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually.

If students can come up with these sort of results during just a 10-week summer fellowship, what could be achieved if businesses got serious about their energy efficiency.

In the U.S. commercial buildings are the source of 18 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas pollution, so environmentally the effects would be substantial but for businesses the first thought is likely to would be the huge boost provided to their bottom lines.

That’s the power and potential of energy efficiency, which Enigin Distributors, as energy saving professionals, highlight to their clients.

With Enigin PLC's Eniscope at the core of much of Enigin Distributor's solutions, they are able to provide real-time power management to direct energy saving strategies for long-term savings but with short-term returns in investment for business owners.
