Enigin News - Smart Meters not as Smart as Eniscope

WHICH? a consumer protection organisation in the UK have just released some details regarding Smart Meters - often lauded as a panacea for energy saving.

Which? chief executive Peter Vicary-Smith said:

‘We've long argued that consumers shouldn't foot the bill for installing smart meters - consumers will save a few pounds every year, but energy companies will save millions.

‘British Gas clearly sees the business benefits of installing Smart Meters, calling into question the Government's assumption that the £8.6 billion cost has to be met by consumers.’

Vicary-Smith touched on a little realised aspect regarding Smart Metering - the main beneficiaries are the utility companies - and they want to charge you to install them.

In the United States recently there has been uproar from some domestic consumers who have found their utility bills have doubled since the installation of Smart Meters - imagine if that happened to your business tariffs?

Contrary to popular belief, Smart Meters were designed primarily for the benefit of the utility companies so they can be in control of your energy consumption.

The utility company benefits in several ways as a smart meter enables them to read your meter remotely - a huge cost saving over manual reading.

Smart Meters help the utilities to control demand - another huge cost saving to them.

They will also allow utilities to cut off your supply remotely - another huge cost saving and a concern if you are in dispute with them.
Via Smart Meters the utility can change your tariff remotely, helping them to maximise their revenue.

No wonder Smart Meters are being installed across the globe, but Smart Meters are not that smart when it comes to energy management and saving.

They do offer advantages over quarterly or even monthly billing, but to effectively control energy use, and hence saving, real-time monitoring and management is needed - the technology is available and can make a huge difference to the size of a businesses utility bill.

Enigin’s Eniscope is a real-time energy monitor and energy management system that works in real-time - it displays over a web browser what you are using as you are using it - a lot smarter than a so called Smart Meter.

With real-time energy monitoring you are in control of what you use and you can monitor your energy spend; seeing in real-time where savings can be made, which means your utility bill will be less, saving money from your bottom-line.
