“The energy savings realised at our first Austin store location has been even greater than what we had originally expected,” said Edward Costa, Vice President of Construction for Office Depot.
These comments were made after the US based office supply and services company revealed the results from their prototype energy efficient store in Austin, Texas, which has proved energy efficiency measures save money and reduce carbon emissions.
Overall, the Austin store is 15 percent more energy efficient (per square foot) than the other Office Depot retail locations in the city.
The store also achieved a 23 percent reduction in carbon emissions per square foot through energy efficiency efforts.
This example highlights that all businesses need to realise the fiscal sense and environmental responsibility of becoming energy efficient.

The Office Depot experiment has proved such a success that they are scheduling 14 new store locations to be built to LEED for Commercial Interiors standards (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) throughout this coming year.
“We intend to continue to make our stores as energy efficient and cost efficient as possible,” added Costa.
