Energy-saving information awareness should start at an early age
Targeting school children with conservation information is the most effective way of making consumers more energy-efficient, according to the findings of a survey on power consumption in Northern Ireland.
This was the opinion of 88 per cent of those polled in the Continuous Household Survey Bulletin 2008/09, which was conducted by Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA).
Some 85 per cent felt that providing clear information on the running costs of appliances and better labelling (83 per cent) would achieve the same by enabling people to purchase the most energy-efficient products.
An increasing number of residents in the province are becoming energy-efficient, with the number of households investing in energy-saving light bulbs increasing to 55 per cent, up from 51 per cent in the previous year.
The NISRA figures also show that 41 per cent had reduced the amount of energy they used.
Energy-saving solutions provider Enigin recently helped Roland Park Elementary and Middle School in Baltimore, Maryland, invest in a power saving programme.
The organisation also educated the school's children about the importance of conservation and how simple practices can make a difference.
