Energy conservation picking up in Australia as firms go green
Most Australian businesses are moving towards a low carbon future by putting in place energy-saving programmes, which are likely to lead to greener living business opportunities in the country.
A major study of 400 businesses by Australian Industry Group (Ai) and accounting firm KPMG has found that nearly three quarters are either already measuring their carbon footprint or plan to do so over the next three years.
Some 38 per cent have already invested in measures to reduce their direct emissions and cut energy overheads in anticipation of the proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS).
"Businesses also have strong plans to take these initial steps further over the coming few years," commented Ai group chief executive Heather Ridout, who added "there are plenty of very encouraging signs".
However, she went on to state that the survey showed there was some confusion over the proposed CPRS legislation and said that more needs to be done to ensure all firms know what will be expected of them.
The CPRS is the Australian government's emissions trading scheme aimed at helping the country meet its emissions targets.
