Electronics giants do battle in energy-saving TV market

Two South Korean electronics firms have identified a business opportunity stemming from the growing demand for energy-efficient home entertainment.

LG and Samsung are both developing a greener alternative to the increasingly popular flat-screen television, which normally make use of a liquid crystal display (LCD).

Aiming to produce a similar model that uses less power, Samsung has come up with a light emitting diode (LED) backlit model, while its rival LG is working on a new product using active matrix organic light emitting diodes.

In comments reported by the AFP news agency, president of Samsung's television business Yoon Boo-Keun explained the energy-saving potential of LED technology at a recent trade conference in Berlin.

"If every TV in the world switched to LED, we could save 13 million kilowatts of electricity - enough to supply all 39 million households in Germany," he said.

According to Reuters, the US market research firm DisplaySearch has forecast growth of 15 per cent in the global LCD TV market this year.
