Consortium for energy-efficient power use launched at US university

A recent meeting at Stony Brook University in New York State saw a host of local dignitaries and businessmen meet to discuss ways of using power efficiently.

Government leaders, utility company representatives, university figures and consumers were all present at the launch of the New York State Smart Grid Consortium, which aims to make energy consumption more efficient with the use of digital technology.

A smart grid harnesses technology such as smart meters to give electricity suppliers information on exactly how much energy is needed and where, thereby improving efficiency in generators, transmission and distribution systems.

One of the dignitaries present at Stony Brook was Governor of New York David Paterson, who commented: "The creation of the New York State Smart Grid Consortium positions New York to lead the nation in developing innovative smart grid technologies while fostering significant growth in clean energy jobs."

He also said that the smart grid strategy would bring together "all facets of the electric power sector" in order to "create jobs, improve service and lower electric bills for New Yorkers".

Other areas of the US where smart grid projects are underway include the cities of Boulder, Colorado and Austin, Texas.
