Clean energy investment can achieve 70% carbon reduction by 2020

Clean energy investment can achieve 70% carbon reduction by 2020

Former British prime minister Tony Blair has called for the adoption of energy-efficient products, solutions and technological initiatives in a bid to tackle climate change.

Mr Blair made his call in a new report entitled Technology for a Low Carbon Future, which states that investing in energy-efficient products can help the world achieve 70 per cent of the reductions needed by 2020.

Launched ahead of president Barack Obama's chairing of a meeting to set a new global climate agreement at Copenhagen later this year, the report recommends focusing on existing energy-efficiency and renewable energy technologies.

"Just as investing in electrification, railways and the internet led to economic growth in the past, investing in clean energy can help reignite the global economy now," said Mr Blair.

"We can set the world on a new path to a low carbon future; the Major Economies Forum is able to put in place a framework for a successful global accord in Copenhagen in December."

Leaders from the Group of Eight countries are meeting this week in Italy.
