China urged by Ban to support energy-saving programmes

China urged by Ban to support energy-saving programmes

More energy-saving business opportunities could emerge in China and around the world if recent calls by United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon are heeded.

While launching a new energy-saving initiative known as the Green Lights Project in Beijing, Mr Ban urged China to act as a role model to the rest of the world by investing in green projects and clean energy.

In light of China's emergence as the world's biggest polluter, the country needs to pursue sustainable environmental and economic policies that will encourage adoption of green products that can cut emissions, he said.

"By investing in green economy and green growth, your country has an opportunity to leapfrog over decades of traditional development based on high-polluting fuels," stated Mr Ban.

"The key is prioritising clean energy, which China has already begun to do, creating new jobs, spurring innovation, and ushering in a new era of global prosperity."

Jointly organised by the UN and the Chinese government, the Green Lights Project is a multi-million dollar initiative aimed at promoting the use of energy-saving lamps.
