Changing perceptions vital for achieving green energy targets

Changing political, economic and industrial thinking as well as technological development will be vital for helping the UK to achieve a seven-fold increase in renewable energy generation over the next decade.

This has been stated by Tom Delay, the chief executive of the UK's Carbon Trust, who was responding to the recently launched government renewable energy and low carbon industrial strategies.

Mr Delay welcomed the announcements, saying that "they significantly reduce investment risk, make some clear choices on UK technology advantage, and tackle some of the key barriers to deployment".

However, he went on to state that the true test of the development will be how the new policy framework will impact upon the business environment and spur greener living business opportunities.

"We can boost our economy, create new industries and new jobs, but we must take action now or risk letting this tremendous opportunity slip between our fingers," he added.

According to the government announcement, more than 1.2 million people will be in green jobs by 2020 and around 40 per cent of electricity will be from low carbon sources.
