California unveils energy-saving plans

Consumers will be given financial incentives to promote investments in energy-saving lighting systems such as LEDs as part of an energy conservation initiative in the US state of California.

California Public Utilities Commission aims to cut its energy consumption with a $2.9 (£1.8 billion) billion package of programmes, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Businesses and domestic consumers are at the centre of the proposals, which contain 12 major energy efficiency initiatives and could result in green business opportunities in the state.

The plans, which include retrofitting around 130,000 homes over the next three years, are expected to result in a drop of 1,536 megawatts in peak electricity demand over the three-year period.

According to the commission, the energy-saving initiatives would save tax payers money by eliminating the need to build more power plants and lines.

Many states across the country are adopting similar conservation initiatives, some of which are funded by the US Department of Energy.
