Businesses provided with energy-saving opportunities by UK government

A range of new energy-saving business opportunities are likely to be created by the UK government's plans for transition into a low-carbon society.

Several reports were unveiled yesterday outlining the broad strokes of plans to ensure that businesses and individuals are given the support needed to reduce the UK's carbon emissions by 34 per cent in time for 2020.

The Low Carbon Transition Plan called for 15 per cent of the required drop in emissions to come from an energy-efficiency programme in the domestic sector, while a further ten per cent must be accounted for by improved electricity usage at businesses.

As well as greener living business opportunities, plans were also unveiled for the UK's first Low Carbon Economic Area in the south-west of England, part of the government's Low Carbon Industrial Strategy.

It is expected that the region will see increased investment for energy-efficiency schemes and renewable energy projects, which could also lead to the creation of more green jobs.

Commenting on its strategy, the government said: "The transition plan is the most systematic response to climate change of any major developed economy, and sets the standard for others in the run up to crucial global climate talks in Copenhagen in December."

It predicted that the measures will help the UK to save 700 million tonnes of CO2 emissions and provide the business opportunities necessary for the country to meet its carbon budgets.
