Businesses 'making savings with energy-efficient IT'

The number of businesses saving money through energy management initiatives in their IT departments is on the rise, according to a new report from US technology provider CDW Corporation.

However, budgetary pressures stemming from the recession have caused many organisations to prioritise reduced operational costs over long-term energy savings in IT this year, the study also indicated.

CDW's 2009 Energy Efficient IT Report found that 52 per cent of IT professionals whose organisations have energy management schemes in place managed to reduce their total IT energy costs, compared with just 39 per cent in 2008.

Commenting on the findings, CDW's vice president Mark Gambill said: "While IT executives are trying to do the right thing - buy the best technology with the right capabilities at the best price - some may sacrifice greater long-term savings from reduced energy use by downgrading the importance of energy efficiency in the purchase equation."

The study also discovered that 53 per cent of higher education institutions in the US offer their IT departments incentives to save energy.

In July, the US Environmental Protection Agency launched a series of Energy Star standard specifications for personal computers and servers.
