Alaska lawmakers accept funding for energy-saving projects

Energy-saving business opportunities could emerge in the US state of Alaska following a move by legislators to undo a veto on millions of dollars of green funding.

Former governor Sarah Palin had turned down $28 million (£17 million) in stimulus money for energy efficiency projects but the Alaska legislature has overturned this decision.

While rejecting the money, the former Republican vice presidential candidate argued that there were strings attached and the state would be forced to conform to stricter building codes.

However, the lawmakers agreed to accept the funding in a one-day session at an Anchorage convention hall, amid pressure from municipal and business leaders who were in favour of the funds.

"We live in the coldest-climate state in the union, and we should be setting the standard in efficiencies and the way energy is being utilised," argued Democrat senator Lyman Hoffman.

The money is likely to benefit energy-saving companies operating in the state and spur new ones as projects to make commercial and residential properties greener are advanced.
